Once you have installed WordPress, the next thing every beginner should know is how to install WordPress plugins. A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites.
For example, if I wanted to add a contact form on my blog page, there is a plugin that will make it easier for me to do just that with a single click. I won’t have to write a code, both on the front end and back end in order to make the form work (respond). Actually, it is what makes working with WordPress fun even when you cannot write a single line of code.
One thing you need to know is that there are thousands of free and premium WordPress plugins. And in this guide, I will show you how to properly install WordPress plugins using two simple methods.
Install WordPress Plugins Using Plugin Search
This is actually the easiest way of installing a WordPress plugin. One thing to note is that the plugin must be in the WordPress Plugin Directory, which is limited to only free plugins.
All you have to do is go to your WordPress admin area and click on Plugins >>>Add New.
Once on the page like the one shown in the image above, find the plugin by typing the name of the plugin or the functionality you would like to add to your WordPress website. After that, you will see a list of plugins related to the one you were looking for, like in the example below.
In my case, I was looking for a slider plugin and so, I’d choose the first plugin on the list which happens to be MetaSlider then click “Install Now” button.
WordPress will then download and install the plugin for you, after which you will see a success message with an “Activate” button.
A WordPress plugin can be installed on your site, but it will not work unless you activate it. So go ahead and click on the “Activate” button to activate the plugin on your WordPress site.
Well, that’s it, you have successfully installed a plugin. The next step will be to configure the plugin settings which actually vary for each plugin.
Install WordPress Plugins Using WordPress Admin Plugin Upload
In most cases, paid/premium plugins are never available on the WordPress Plugins directory. So, you will need to first download the plugin files (usually a zip file) from an external source to your device. Then, you will need to go to WordPress admin area and visit Plugins » Add New page.
After that, click on the “Upload Plugin” button on top of the page.
This will take you to plugin upload page where you will need to click “Choose File” button and select the file you had downloaded to your device earlier on.
After you have selected the file, click on the “Install Now” button.
WordPress will upload the plugin file from your device and install it for you. After the installation is finished, you will see a success message like this with a link to Activate Plugin or Return to Plugin Installer.
Go right ahead and activate the plugin by clicking on the “Activate Plugin” button.
You will then need to configure the plugin settings to fit your needs in order to start using it.
I hope this blog post helped you learn how to properly install WordPress plugins for your website.
